Yes, very sad indeed. I am about 45 minutes away from his shop, always droped in when I was in Saint John. He will surely be missed.

Warren Duncan was simply the best fly tier that I have ever seen. He was an even finer human being.

I spent several weeks tying with the man at his fly shop on the Hickey Road in St. John, N.B. during the early 1990's. I swept the floor and sent him customers to buy his flies as he would take no money. At the end of a week of hardcore tying, video watching of dubious distinction, inhalation of second-hand smoke, shots of scotch at 1:00 p.m., pizza for breakfast, and copious amounts of caffeine I would pile what seemed like a fifth of Warren's entire fly-tying inventory--the really good stuff was behind the counter--and hand him a credit card. He would pull a volume of poetry--usually Robert Service--and place it atop the immense pile of custom-dyed hen necks and Metz saddles, floss, tinsel, deer hair, a Wheatley box or two and several dozen W.D.-tied flies, return my credit card as if I had insulted him, and tell me in no uncertain terms to get the hell out of his fly shop.

I would often stop in his shop on my way to points north. I usually brought a bottle of Glenlivet, the immediate consumption of which often placed a severe kink in my travel plans. I will miss him more than I can say, and I am actually somewhat pissed off at him for not taking better care of himself. In a world where mentors are few and far between and a game where much is held pretty tight to the vest, I remember Warren as the most talented, most generous, and most intelligent man that I have ever met in the sport.

M. Warren Duncan.

Since I was a young fly fisherman, I had a dream.......

For many of us living in big city's, we always wanted to go where nature is at it's best, where it is dominant and to get free of all stress and all the rest of the city crowd's just to get intoxicated by the sounds of wildlife and nature and oubviosly, Salmon.

I never met Warren but I have always reconised is talent by the quality of is fly tying and inovative patterns he as shared with the fishing community.

With the years I have being gracefull to have fished with many of his fish taken patterns and it's a great lost for many of us, to see a great one leave so, but so to soon, in ours life's.

As a young fly fisherman, I had many dreams...., thank you lord for giving me the opportunaty to have known a such great fly tyer, as Warren Duncan.

My sincere condolence and sympathy to all the family and friends.

Here are some flies that Warren had donated to TU for auction. I had met him in NB and "fished" some of his recommended patterns, like many others I'm sure. When I saw these for auction I just had to get them, but I've never fished them. Now I can share them with others who can appreciate the mastery of the man's art.

May I say how sorry I am to hear of the passing of Warren Duncan, although I only met him the once he was a total gentleman.

I learnt more from Warren about tying hairwings in an hour or so than I have from everyone else put together in 40 years of tying flies.

I've passed details of this forum and thread onto the Fly Dressers Guild forum.

While reading through J. Bates over the weekend I noticed that the Joe gives notice and credit to Warren Duncan of "Dunc's Fly Shop" in St John, NB for developing and popularizing the "Undertaker". I never had the pleasure of meeting Warren but it was nice to see tribute to him in Bates. I tied Undertakers all this weekend.
