This fly is the most popular of a series of flies created by Keith Fulsher in 1982, all using red fox hair for the wings. Fulsher notes that red fox is not highly used for salmon flies despite its good texture and color. You can substitute almost any color for the collar and tag but black, green, orange and yellow are some of the more popular colors in the series. This fly is used extensively on rivers in Newfoundland and New Brunswick. The creator, Fulsher, is best known for his Thunder Creek streamer flies.

Hook: Up eye salmon hook.
Tag: Small oval silver tinsel and fluorescent blue floss.
Tail: Guinea hen fibers.
Rib: Oval gold tinsel.
Body: Flat silver tinsel.
Wing: Red fox hair.
Collar: teal blue hen hackle
Head: Black.

Dwayne,

Glad you like them. It’s also a good way to stock my boxes for next year. As for Demo size I like them in the larger sizes, 2 - 2/0. They photograph better in the big sizes. However, I do make them smaller just because I may need them in the smaller sizes.

Charlie,

It is nice to see one of his flies. Even his Thunder Creek Series baitfish imitations are not seen very often these days, despite their effectiveness.

Russ,

I just noticed that Keith came out with a new book this year. “Thunder Creek Flies: Tying and Fishing the Classic Baitfish Imitations”. It is a totally revised and updated version of his 1973 book. Perhaps his flies will see a resurgence of popularity with the new book.

Charlie,

I would really like to see a resurgence in popularity of his Thunder Creek series. They are among the most effective baitfish imitations I've ever used, provided they are tied sparsely as Fulsher does.

this fly would do quite well for summer steel, that's for sure.
Charlie, constantly in awe of your abilities and willingness to share.
thx.
