I'am hoping to finally get to Belize (Ambergris) for a DIY this Feb. Have been trying for a couple years now. Anyway, someone (non-fisher person) mentioned about
the need for antimalarial meds there. The CDC does mention Belize as a malarial area, but I didn't know you have to start an antimalarial medication regime before
going, while there and for weeks once you get back. Have those of you that have been to Belize taken the meds? How big a problem do you think malaria is there ?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

there is a little risk, but it is negligable where you are going.

I think it's just a pill a week while you're down there and the week before. Why risk it?

My friend as long as I know Belize has the highest incidence of malaria in the Americas. Risk is present year-round in all rural areas of the country under 400 meters elevation, but especially during and after the rainy season. Overall, incidence is highest in the southern districts, but most falciparum cases are reported from the northern districts. There is no risk of malaria in Belize City. P. vivax causes 96% of cases, P. falciparum 4%, but P. falciparum has been reported as high as 16% in some areas.

Welcome to the wonderful world of doxicycline...

Malaria prophylaxis... Lariam, Malarone, and Doxicycline are the three most effective anti-malarial drugs.

In my previous life (USAF worldwide tourist) I'd start a week before (1 tab/day) and continue until 2 weeks after return to Estados Unidos.
It makes you sun-sensitive...Just what a phlatz rat wants to hear...

Even with the marvels of modern medicine, after my numerous "holidaze" in Phenom Phen...OOOPS! :Eyecrazy: I was NEVER in Cambodia...NEVER... :tsk_tsk: but just hypothetically saying I was...The occassional fever and night sweats took a long time to go away...and I still can't donate blood...That is, if I had ever actually spent "quality" time in a certain place where I would have flown large aluminum airplanes with NO markings... ;)

Take the doxi and don't pheed the blood sucking mosquitos!
And if you really want to live on the edge of paranoia...Google "Bott Fly"
That'll make you want to sleep under the stars!
God Bless America!
