Will be in Portland for Thanksgiving. I know nothing about fishing the area. Are there still fish around? Anything available to the wading angler? Or if boat's needed, good guides in the area?
Many thanks
Bill

I will defer to the Maine-acs but in the years I was up in the area working w/ BIW systems div. my understanding was that your options would be down to searun browns, late mackeral and cod. Trout inland. Possibly some holdover stripers up inside dark marshes.

Searuns would be interesting, in fact probably your best game. The streams running into the sea along the Maine Turnpike hold huge searun browns. Of hours best, many are perplexed by them each year as they are easy to spot but hard to trick during daylight hours.

If you score please post a pic - they are gorgeous fish.

The Ogunquit river, Mousam and Royal River are known as searun rivers but certainly not the only ones.

Hello Bill,

I think the Presumscot River (sp?) may remain open through Thanksgiving. On a good day, you can pick up a descent LL salmon or two. Its been a long time since I fished that river and I can't even remember the name of the town near the spot we fished. I suggest you give L.L. Bean a call and ask. I am sure someone there would have information you need.

I do know that "from October 1 November 30, the area located between and including the Standish boat launch ramp and the Portland Water District pump station pier is open to fly fishing only, with barbless hooks, from shore and pier only; all fish caught must be released alive at once." 2006 Open Water Fishing Regulations - Cumberland County. I have fished this area in Octobers past and have seen some nice LL salmon and brown trout caught (not by me, however). Bring your long underwear and chest-high waders. (Even though the reg says "from shore", I am pretty sure wading is permitted, at least it was in the past).

I hope this helps some.

I should have mentioned that stripers are, essentially, gone from the Portland area by Thanksgiving. If, however, you are willing to gamble on holdover fish, give Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop -- -877-427-9345 -- a call and see what may be around. Generally, however, stripers are pretty much gone by mid-October.

Trout fishing is your best bet. Presumpscot in No Windham, Mousam in Kennebunk, Ogunquit in Wells, or Kennebec in Fairfield.
