: Redfish Leader

I just got my first rod:hihi: , Sage VPS 9' 8 wt, and am going down to the camp (Grand Isle, La) in two weeks. I wanted to know about leaders, I am thinking about 3 feet each of 30lb, 20lb, and 12lb:confused: , secured with Surgeons nots. Does this sound right, should the last section be longer. The fish will be in the 3lb-11lb range with a few cruising around 20:D . Thanks for your help, and I'll try to take and Post some Pics of my first fish on a fly(hopefully).

PS anybody know any good redfish flies

Hi Brian
When I fish for Reds I usually use reasonably large flies size 1 or 1/0.
With flies that size you do not normally have a problem turning over the leader so the step down is not so important. Also I use a slightly heavier shock tippet of 30lbs. The reason for this is that while reds do not have teeth or sharp gills, when hooked they will rub their haeds against the bottom.

what to do then:

1- Not Taper at all, just a straight length of 30 lb mono
2- add a length of 30lb mono to the end of a tapered leader (seems useless)
3- taper down to 30lb mono (maybe from 50 lb)

Everything I've read says to taper down to the tippet (the thinnest part). Having fished redfish with commie tackle most of my life used 12 or 15lb mono, I don't see the need for a 30lb shock leader. Having said that, I've never fished fly tackle, so I am learning. Thanks for all the help, and I'm sure there will be yearss upon years of more learning (I can't wait).

Sorry I have not made myself clear.

30lb but section - 3ft.
20 lb - 3 ft.
15 lb 2ft

Shock tippet 30lb 18ins.

My best flies for reds are red woolly bugger, red and white seaducer, Spoon fly. All with weed guards.

I usually tie leaders with 50% butt section. In the case of you leader, I would tie something like 4.5' of 30#, 24" of 20#, 24" of 12#. Maybe a 12" bite leader of 20 or 30#.
I am sure if you do a search on this site, you will find some good leader recipes.
