I took the shrink-wrap off a new TFO TiCr 7 wt to find 3 ~1/4" by 1/4" spots where a silicone sealant was used to fill voids in cork. All 3 spots are right where my thumb wants to go. he silicone has receded just enough below the cork surface to make the spots very noticable by feel. Color match is very good, so it wasn't noticable through the shrinkwrap, but then again, I didn't particularly search for it.
What's going on here? I've never heard of or seen this on a new rod. Has anybody encountered this type of 'repair' on other lfdyrods.
It's annoying, to say the least.

I just took out a TICR-X 7wt that I purchased about a month ago and double checked it. Its not the best cork but I noticed noticed nothing like what you found. I remember seeing a post somewhere about cork problems with some of their lower priced rods but not on the TICR's. I would give them a call. Seen any bull sharks lately?

Low cost rod usually equates to low quality cork and cosmetics of lessor quality than more expensive rods. This is simply economics. Good cork costs a lot more than low quality cork (i.e. lots of pits that need to be filled), and when rods are in the lower price category, poor cork is not the exception.

I have owned several temple forks in the past. None now. I loved the way the TICR's cast but the cork on all of them started falling apart. Main reason I don't own any now. But their customer service will take care of any problems. They are great in that regard. Good rod for the money.

I had a surprise in the mail last night. A brand new TiCr 7wt grip section direct from TFO. They must have seen this post and decided to send out a replacement section. Needless to say, this one has a superb-quality cork grip.
I'm astounded that they would scan these boards and correct percieved problems to this extent. I did not intend to take the rod in for exchange, since I don't like to go through it, and the rod was perfectly fishable.
Once again, thanks to TFO, although now I'm slightly embarrased that I put up the post in the first placve. My intent was NOT to try to score a free replacement.

It does sound a little crazy doesn't it? However, I know Josko personally, and we have a very attentive TFO rep here who knows us both. We talk at local flyshows, in fact I ended up at the same table during the Denver trade show dinner, etc - so although I don't think some random post from Tibuktu would solicit such a response I believe this actually happened, and thus I am honestly impressed - who wouldn't be?

Indeed great customer service. Even though I don't own any TFO's because I prefer the added performance and better cosmetics of the high end ones, this speaks volumes about how TFO thinks about its customers.
And there are those who wonder why so many buy TFO rods.
