After being introduced to the "green machine" by this forum, with many saying it is one of their favorite flies, I tied a bunch over the weekend, on light wire Wilsons, with brown or yellow palmered hackles.

Question: How is this fly usually fished? Is it fished as a wet, or dry or a combination of both?

In my experience -- in both NB and QC -- the GM is fished wet more often than not. All the GMs I have seen have been tied on heavy wet fly or nymph hooks to facilitate fishing them under the surface film.

The GM, as usual, was very effective on the Miramichi when we fished that river last week. A full report will be posted later today or tomorrow. The fishing was fantastic.

When tying the fly, don't pack the deer hair too close together( like you would with a bomber) otherwise the fly will tend to stay up too much. Also, don't put too stiff or too much hackle for the same reason. I've got it figured out for me after a couple of years of expeimentation. I also like a white bucktail tail with a very small flourescent red butt. Then again I used to like to date blonds...

I generally fish the fly as a typical wet fly, swung at a basic 45 dagree cast or even more across stream cast. I think the fly works best in relatively flat water where the hackle under the surface makes a good impression. Many pools on the Miramichi seem to be flat pools where in my mind this fly is perfect.

Any other views..

Well judging from the past two replies (and thanks for them), I tied a dozen all the wrong way. Firstly I tied them on light wire dry hooks, and secondly, I packed the deer hair as I would if tying a bomber.

So should I just throw them away or should I fish them either with Riffling Hitches or as a dry? Any luck on them if they are fished on the surface.......either as a dry or a waking dry?

Going forward, I will ty them as both of you suggested......on a regular wet wire hook, and loosly packed so to sink below the surface.

Another way to tie the GM is to use micro chennile (sp?) or dubbing for the body instead of deerhair. The flies tied that way work just fine and are alot easier and faster to produce.
