I was practicing my casting the other day and kept getting these weird wind knots. I was using 4 lb. Triline mono tied to a small piece of plastic ribbon. The leader kept twisting into these long braided knots 3 to 6 inches long. I just had to pull straight apart and let the leader spin for a minute and it would be corrected. This would happen after only one or two casts. The wind was almost non-existant. I'm not sure if this is a casting error I'm making or something with that perticular spool of mono.

Sounds like the ribbon was causing the twisting. Instead of the ribbon, try taking an old fly with a rusted hook (if you have any) and cut off the hook at the end of the shank.

Thanks, that make sense.

It sounds like the torquing action of the plastic ribbon was furling, rather than braiding, parts of your leader. Have you heard of furled leaders and furled extention bodies on stone fly dries? Same thing.

I have never heard of furled leaders or furled extention bodies, but I will keep it in mind.

Use a small bit of yarn, tied symmetrically to the tippet. You'll find similar happenings casting Goddard caddis dry flies with prominent antennae.
