Nantucket Wind Farm

FOr those of you not privvy to the Boston GLobe this AM check out the follow up article regarding the proposed wind farm off Nantucket.

I have mixed thoughts: structure attracts bait although it may restrict access to the area, good chum grinders I'm sure.

I wonder how it will affect the migration and behavior of the area's fish and coastal bird population? Will the vibration affect the small organisms that hold the ecosystem together out there? If they are prone to falling into pieces, they must generate a distinct vibration into the ground and we know that ground vibration does to earth dwellers because it's a way to rid rodents and collect earthworms. Vibration is significantly stronger in water.

I would bet that any school of migrating fish would swim clear of the noise and visual effect of such a 'farm'. Birds would avoid it, and sand eels and other forage would be repelled by the vibration. Unless the ambient 'noise' was eliminated I would be against.

I would ask why they don't put them on dry land?
