Killer looking flies Jim. :smokin:

Last time I was down that way I looked closely at the small swiming crabs in the shallows and the swimming legs look just like grizzly hackle tips.

Bill Kessler (wrke) had great success with your mesh crab patterns in Acklins last week and was highly complimentary of them while his Hardy (yes he fishes a Hardy on the flats) was wailing away with a fish running madly across the flat.

Here's a link to the mesh body crab thread. It was over on the striper flies archive board.

The original was marketed as the 'flexo crab' by orvis. It originated down south for redfish but seems to work great anywhere crabs are on the menu.:)

Also try the turneffe crab, and the "Acklins" crab which is similar without the fuzzy body and using antelope instead of deerhair.

I created a variation using a simple (yet hard to find) mottled marabou in place of both the fuzz and antelope and it did the trick.

I wouldn't get too hung up on specifics of the fly, the presentation as in all sight fishing is more critical than the fly itself as long as it portays the proper illusion to the fish at the right moment.

Adrian & Juro
Thanks for those patterns! :) tied some up and they look very fishy.
Question on the mesh crab: If one ties it up clear and w/o marker coloring, will the color of the actual bottom show thru the mesh? ....
Kind of a Chameleon or natural Chamo effect? If so, I was thinking of doing them all natural/clear. What have you found to be effective in the islands?
Thanks again

The original 'flexo crab' that I based these on was tied using clear/white flexo tube. I would start with the clear pattern and take some marking pens in rust/tan/olive to darken them up if needed.

I found a source for flexo tube (25ft for $6 plus shipping) since EZ Body is curently in short supply. It comes in solid colors including white but takes up pantone dye very readilly.
