: Tarpon Leader

Ok, first off I'm a salt water rookie. This my sound incredably basic but I'm headed to belize in June and would like to take a shot at some Tarpon (hopefully on the smaller size) I've been reading about gear and keep hearing about shock tippets. So I bought one (mastery 20# w/ a 80# shock 36" lenght).
Now what do I do with this thing? I assume the 80# (shock) gets attached to my fly but since it is only 3' long don't I have to attach a longer leader in front of it? How should I make this longer leader? I usually make my own but have no idea what formula would turn this thing over. And speaking of leaders are blood knots sufficient? And speaking of knots what is the best way to attach the fly?
I know my chances of landing one of these isn't great but "when in Rome"

The "leader" you have should be looped onto a 5'-6' length of 40# butt section. A double surgeon's knot. I albright this to the flyline (only failed once), but a double nail knot is supposed to be better.

Attaching the fly to the 80lb bite tippet can be accomplished with a 3.5-turn clinch knot or a two-turn kreh loop. Use a pair of pliers on the tag end to tighten the knots on 80lb.
