To any and all Maine salmon folks out there - I heard that it is an American tradition that the first atlantic salmon caught in Maine after a new president is elected gets packed and shipped to the White House.
Is this true?

It was true, the last year they did it was 1993. The first salmon taken from the Bangor Salmon pool each spring would be shipped of to Washington. The traditon began in 1912 the last President to accept in person was George Bush at his place in Kennybunk.
So OK, George Sr's a good guy - but I'm not so sure about Jr... too bad the regime that has been making progress on environmental issues (like the removal of the dam) will be replaced by a majority in house, senate and white house known to be driven by big business agendas.
I guess Bruce Babbitt is a goner... too bad! At least he got the endangered species act for the protection of Maine's salmon thru in time.
