: Okuma Freespoll Problem

I have an Okuma Integrity that has only been used twice, with one decent Chum caught on it. It freespools about half the time if you reel it backwards, and has started to do it about 30% of the time when pulling line out now. Can this be fixed at the workbench, or is it my new paperweight? I have had it long enough that any warranty is expired. There is so little river time on the reel that I would hate to retire it already. When the drag is working right, it is very smooth and capable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be to find out the address for service and send the reel and a polite letter to the manufacturer explaining the problem. Often, this will get you a free replacement even if the warranty period has ended. At the very least you will get your reel repaired and maybe for much less than the cost of a replacement. Most manufacturers realize it's in their best interest to keep customers satisfied!

You get what you pay for I guess. Penny-wise but pound foolish but that's just my opinoin

Before you spend any money repairing or shipping, get some decent reel grease from a tackle shop and liberally grease up the roller clutch bearings. Roller clutches have to be kept lubricated, especially if used in saltwater or they freespool. I had one reel that freespooled occasionally when it was new but never freespooled again after one application of grease.

Thanks, Peter-s-c. That took care of the problem. Works fine now.
