Perfectly appropriate for a fellow FF'er who has been ripped off! I hope we can catch this crook.

Juro,

Thanx. Al is a fellow member on another board.

We're "hoping" that the culprit is a thief and not an angler :(

We don't have so much trouble on my home waters as there is quite a bit of traffic in and out of the pull outs where we leave our vehicles.

As the area is patrolled by wardens, anyone "hanging around" a pickup will be politely asked if they "need" anything from a fellow angler, a Guide or a Warden.

Well,....

According to Deanna on the other board, .... the Kids who stole Al's stuff tried to sell it at a local pawn shop.

Busted!! :chuckle:

Not sure if he got everthing back though ...

Greg,

Not private waters. In Quebec, ... almost all (or maybe all) the Atlantic salmon rivers are managed by what we call Controlled Exploitation Zones. Non-profit organisations that have the mandate to manage, promote and "valorize" the resource.

Many Salmo salar rivers here used to be "private" clubs held by some of te big companies (Price Brothers, Alcan, etc). Since the 70's (I think), the govt "de-clubbed" the waters.:)

These are public waters, but not "open access". That is to say, ... there are daily rod fees to pay for access and some "limited # rods" sections.

Sorry if my previous posting caused any confusion.

Great post and glad to hear those dickheads got busted. I hope your friend got all his gear back intact.

I hadn't heard about Canada "democratising" the Atlantic Salmon rivers which I think is awesome.

Now, if the United States could do something similar and make all land within 1/4 mile of the high water mark public property that would really be something :lildevl:

Adrian,

I was out West when this all came about.

It did take some time to change some of the old habits.

'ya see, ... on SOME rivers, ... Poaching wasn't seen as disrespect for the resource,... it was seen as "cheating" The Company

On our home waters, ... the locals (guides, wardens etc) were prohibited from fishing for salmon. They COULD however take home 30 lbs of trout for the family.

After several decades of education etc, ... IMHO, ... things are going well.

Say what you may about the old private clubs, ... these waters ar now some of the best managed in the world. (again, ... imho)

Access to water is pretty good in Cdn ... Hope something like that gets through to law makers in the US. ... UK, ... I wonder how it works ??
