: This is good stuff! an Oregon Single

Refilling some depleated stocks I noticed something new on the horizon. I bought a bottle and I must say it is nice!

McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey (note spelling)

Pot Distilled

Barrel Aged

This McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey is of the Islay tradition of Scotch whisky. Of well known single malts from Scotland, it resembles the Lagavulin whisky. It is very peat-y.

I bring peat-malted barley in from Scotland and make a "wash" of it. Then we distill in our Holstein pot stills using one pass distillation, but making a small "heads" cut and a fairly large

tails cut and putting about 4 liters of tails into the next still run. The proof at time of distillation is about 150 (75%). Then we reduce in proof and age in old sherry casks. All the Oregon Single Malt now spends some time in barrels made from air dried Oregon Oak . The present bottling is only 3 years old but we think it is remarkably smooth for such a young whiskey. We are now holding back some of each year’s production for longer aging.

Good evening,
Andre, here's a bit of background. That's Steve Mc Carthy at Clear Creek Distillery here in Portland. Story goes, he and his wife were "Stuck in a fishing lodge in Western Ireland" on a fishing trip that went south on them due to the weather and un-cooperative fish. All that was left was to "Play pool and drink Whiskey". And so they did, sampling a number of brands.
Back in the states 6 years later, he started Clear Creek doing euro-style fruit brandies. Then hooked up with Kurt Widmer (local Portland Micro-brewer, great beer!) to do the Whiskey thing. the rest, they say, is history.

Word has it that sinktip is fond of Monach Scotch and loves an ESL when he putts for dough, I guess we will have to fish together so I can dispell this terrible rumor. :lildevl:

Yeah, I read about that story in the liquid(s) store. Pretty cool and the stuff is pretty damn good. I about fell over when I saw a single malt from Oregon.

Come on Rich, I log on in hopes of shaming my good friend Andre into sending up a sample of this new Oregon nectar and instead find all sorts of falsehoods and fabrications about my choices of drink and dressing.

While it is true that in fits of excess, I have been known to tip a bottle or two of less than premier hooch, I would never stoop to the levels you reside and insult one of god's finest creatures with something as crude as an ESL. It's just not proper and if pushed to the wall, I would rather throw a sand shrimp or dare I say it, deaddrift a CopCar.

Now back to the thread, hey Andre, share the love!

If Rich is correct and you have imbibed such poor quality hooch, a Cop Car would be the proper item to use on the end of your tippet. However, if Rich is incorrect, he ought to be duly chastised by being consigned to drinking only "bar scotch" (that questionable stuff they pour for those simply asking for scotch) the next time you are with him.
