I had two awsome days on the Upper Sacramento River this weekend while I am on business for two weeks. Had 19 fish, all Rainbows. The largest was 21" and most where in the upper teens. I will post some picture as soon as I get them developed.

That is too cool Nate! Sure makes the time away from home easier to take, eh? That's some fine fishing, no need to hit the delta (the stripers will be here when you return).

Look forward to seeing the photos,

I love that place! If you are going to go fishing again you should email me. I have all kinds of good ideas. The Yuba is only 2hrs away and the fish are truly special. Shad are in on the American (in Sacramento, about an hour 15) and...well...there are stripers in the Bay. People have benn catching them, but I have not heard of any being caught from shore on a fly.
The come back of the trout on the upper sac. rivals that of the stripers back east. As you might know, in 1992 a train full of pesticide derailed near the head waters and killed everything for miles. The river was closed to fishing for three years and without planting the river it is coming back. Wild, native fish. Rebounding from what could conservatively be called a catastrophy. The ability of nature to endure mankinds attacks is amazing. On the lower sac. the govt. has decided that there aren't enough stealhead left to bother trying to save. Give em a chance.
Well I didn't mean to step on the soap box. Eddie

Hi Eddie -

Sounds like you know the area well! I remember the spill... I was outraged but now it's great to hear that mother nature has fought her way back. She's a tough gal, but fragile too (if that makes any sense).

Anyway, didn't mean to sound down on the delta - I've seen the striper statistics out there and I know it ain't shabby. I'm still amazed that all that came from one planting!

Out of curiosity, I know people do well with plugs off shore out there in the bay. Any observations on the fly scene out there? Do people do it?

Juro, People do catch em on the fly from shore. They usually wake up befor me to beat the all ways present 20 knot wind. Dave @ World Waters catches them regularly(he sais) in Saulsalito. Bag on the Delta all you like, the fishing there is only ok. Heres a piece of injustice though: I think that the 20 and 16# igfa records on a fly were set on the Smith River(of stealhead fame) in CA.!

YOWSA! I have seen some hellacious figures for striper poundage out of Oregon too, all the way up to Tillamook. Of course they have 50 pound chinook salmon there too!

So what are you fishing for nowadays out there?
