have a really really cheap 9wt. someone gave me years ago (I think it was made by Eagle Claw). I am meeting some family the first week of August in an area that is called the "outer banks" of Virginia.

I was hoping to mess around trying to catch something on a fly rod in the Bay or the surf. Is anyone out there familiar with that area or have any advice on tactics and flies for catching fish that time of year? Doesn't need to be large fish, just something fun.

Thanks alot.

Not sure about the first wk august but that area is smokin' with inshore small tuna activity later on (Nov). My guess is that there will be good action with blues, spanish mackerel, weaks ('trout'), tarpon, drum, croakers, king mackerel and even some mahi mahi and wahoo if you get out on a boat. Bluewater seems to be very active in August there too.

I would think you'd have a lot of interesting tide changes walking the beach with a popper or baitfish pattern but bring steel leader as many of these fish will cut your tippet in a split second.

Thanks for responding, Juro. If I focus on the smaller species (trout, blues, etc...) do you have any recommendations for flies? Will a shrimp pattern work?

Small clousers and deceivers are a good bet for about anything that swims!
