I found a good deal on a 5wt 9' and a 6wt 9' Sage LE. I was wondering what you all thought about this rod. I don't think Sage is making them any more thats why its at a good price.

Have you cast them yet? And do you currently own any rods that you really like? It'd be best to try and cast a few rods side-by-side to feel how the actions are different, and to find out what you like.

I bought a 590-4 LE as my first rod, and it's a good rod, but not at the full price I paid for it (nearly $200 new). True, it's a Sage, but I wish the sales guy at the fly shop I went to had told me about one of the lower-priced alternatives like Temple Fork, especially considering my graduate student budget. But I didn't know much at that stage... I've still got it, but if I did it again I would have gone with a TFO to start with.

If you get a good enough deal, go for it, as you'll have the Sage warranty behind it as well. It's got a true medium/medium fast action; the fit and finish on the rod is ok. If you search around you can find rods as good or better on sale for probably less than what you'll pay for the Sage on sale (try looking for a TFO Pro or TiCr 590-4, depending on what action you like). Also try casting the LE and the new Sage low-end rods side-by-side, I've heard good things about the FLi and the Launch series.

Hope this helps...

I think part of the reason for the low response may be that it was not a hugely popular rod. I don't know anyone who owns one, where everyone I know owns a Sage of a different model. I own several single-handers myself.
