Hello,

I am looking to buy a good steelhead reel for around $100 or less. I hate to re-invent the wheel when it comes to shopping for fly fishing gear. Any suggestions?

Shane

PS - I will be fishing an 8wt.

If you are looking for an inexpensive, fairly strong reel for an 8wt single hand rod, you are pretty limited. Pflueger is one of the very few selling reels for under $100.00 US that will hold a single hand 8wt line and 150 yds or so of 30lb backing. I don't know if Cortland is still marketing its 200D reel or not, but if so, it is another one at under $100.00. Okuma makes some reels under $100.00 that would also work. There really aren't many reels under $100.00 of somewhat decent quality with enough capacity for the line and backing.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Guess I will need to invest another $100 to get something that will work.

Take a look at the Echo 69 reel from Tim Rajeff. These reels sell for $69.95 with spools @ $39.95. These are composite reels and they are TUFF. I have several customers using them for steelhead and they work great. One has even been to Alaska for some salmon fishing and the owner is very pleased with how it performed. Tim also tested them on bonefish. You can find a dealer near you by looking here:

My orvis battenkill works really well with the steelhead and salmon, may I suggest the mid arbor at $115?
