Just had to get out last night, hit a local pond with my kickboat @ 5:30 using my 4 weight. I had figured the warm weather would have the panfish up & hitting in the shallows & I was right.
I was surprised at the dull colors of the fish. Everything but a few plate sized sunfish were very dull, some were even black & white. Do you think they lose the brightness of their colors during the winter when their down deep
Good to get the kinks out of the casting arm, hitting the salt tomorrow.
I have found that the panfish normally are a deeper color if they are in some darker water, but this varies on temprature, if they are on the bed or not. They are on the bed in Mississippi. The most prettiest largemouth i have seen are caught in a lake that in clear to the bottom, like 25 feet, on a sunny day. but there is very very good amount of hydrilla and weeds on the bottom. They are a dark green with noticeable black marks, and are just the perfect specimen of what a largemouth should look like. They eat bream in that lake, and I kill the on the bluegill color whitlock wakers in the evenin. I tye em weighted and trip them beneath the surface and let them float to the top and do it again
I've also noticed the dull color this spring, compared to past years. Some bluegills I caught last week could have been called gray gills. It may be the result of the lack of light over the winter. This winter had a relatively long period of time that the ponds I fish were covered with ice, and the ice out was only about a month ago.
Hey Roop,
Guess what Largemouth like? Beadheaded Wollybuggers. Field tested at Disney by a 3 lb. bucket mouth and some smaller ones last week. (on the 6 wt.)
