Verry, verry nice. I think some of them will show up in my fly box this season. One question, when wet do they slim way down? Would an underbody bulk them up?

Hi Steve...
Without ballast (lead wrapped on the shank from the get go) these will tend to be slightly boyant...NOT necessarilly a bad thing!
The photo below shows how the rabbit and hackle fluff up to swim in the water...long strip, short strip, long strip, rest, BANG!
I prefer to minimize material to "insinuate" shape...less is sometimes more...
Too much bulk can inhibit the cast and defeat the desired illusion...
One of my favourite things to do (while clothed) is to watch a phat Stripe crush a near-the-surface squid...(diving birds can be/has been an issue...bring a towel to quiet the bewildered aviary victim)...
If deep is my goal, I rely on a 350 (or heavier) sink tip to drag it down for rip/surf fishing...relatively short 4-6' flouro leader...down you go!
...otherwise, I use a full floater or intermediate so as to fully appreciate the take and the determined/preditory look on the phish's phace...
The cephilopod morsal will stay near enough the surface to allow witness of the lethal assault!
But I degress...
To answer you question...
What ever floats your boat!?
Sure you could add underbody...but I don't think it's necessary since the profile is fairly acceptable and there is already good movement potential going on (even when not being stripped)...colour variations are always an interesting option!
Try a prototype...go outside the lines!

Chase down that Fuzzy Notion!

Nice work Pete!

Pete those look great :whoa:

How do you epoxy the eyes on there? Are you epoxying each eye to an individual saddle or gooping the whole thing up?

Never done well with squid flies but I can see I've been using the wrong ones!

Dave...
I like it when you ask me questions that I can answer!...
When I use mylar braid to form the body for squid, I usually goop the eyes right to it...
This pattern started with the eyes epoxied into the material near the hook bend...
Messy...and I wanted them farther to the rear for better proportions...
I came up with this idea last winter in the middle of a snow storm...
"PharSideEyez"...Go Phigure!?

Take heavy mono (in this case 200#)...form a tight loop by crimping in half and hold with hemostats or similar device...
...I got mine in the goodies bin near the check out at Ace Hardware (I boycott Aubuchon's because Charlie Moore annoys me so!...) ...but I digress...
Epoxy the eyes to the tight loop and let cure...
Goop or Aqua-Seal would probably work even better but I don't have that sort of patience when I'm on a mission...
The photo below says it more clearly...
Position/Secure the "PharSideEyez" to the fly with thread and Zap-a-Gap...
Cover with follow on material...
Add salt water and present to a "PhishyPhocusGroup"... :D

I was supposed to accompany Capt Terry Nugent and his rag tag band of pirates to the Outer Banks but had to abandon ship prior to the NC assault...
... soonerorlater I'll be in your neighborhood and there's (almost) nothing I'd like better than to have you help me annoy some of those Carolina phin critters!!!
Turn about is fair play...any time you can venture to the Peoples Republic of Taxachusetts (home of Ted Kennedy, Barny Frank, Kerry, and Whitey Bulger) gimme' a shout and I'll reserve you a VIP suite at the Area 61 Transient Officers Quarters!
Monomoy Phlatz Phishing...worse things could happen to you!?

Pete, nice job on the patterns and the flat photos. During the upcoming winter doldrums, it might be cool to run a photo contest. You've got an exellent archive of aerials that could be used for "Name the location."

Maybe the winter doldrums have alread set in for me.
