Since winter steelheading is upon us, I thought I'd post a scan of one of my favorite winter dee flies, the AKROYD. This is one is tied on an Alec Jackson Blind Eye Spey Hook #1.5 and uses Argus Pheasant wing sections for the wing.

The pattern for those who don't know it:

Tag: Flat silver tinsel.
Tail: G.P. crest and G.P. tippet in strands.
Butt: Black ostrich.
Rear Body: light orange dubbing ribbed with oval silver tinsel.
Rear hackle: Yellow.
Joint: Black ostrich.
Front Body: Black floss ribbed with medium or large flat silver tinsel with oval
silver tinsel along the back edge of the flat.
Front hackle: Black spey feather.
Throat: Guinea.
Wing: Cinnamon turkey, White turkey, or Argus pheasant wing.
Sides: Jungle cock.

I love the way this fly looks with the Argus Pheasant wing. This is one type of fly I have not gotten the hang of yet. I think that will be one of my winter projects. Allways like looking at a well tied one to help get it down my self.

Argus wing or tail are my favorite dee wing materials because they are easy to work with, hold up very well, and plenty long enough, and have those nice markings, which to my eye adds to the fly. By the way, the one pictured is tied with black schlappen for the spey feather prepared the way I described in the thread on schlappen.
