THOMPSON STEELHEAD FISHERY TO REOPEN

*

KAMLOOPS Ė The Thompson River catch-and-release steelhead fishery will reopen on Saturday, Oct. 30.
*
*********** The decision was made by the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection following evidence that the riverís steelhead population has reached a sustainable level. The most recent findings of the Albion test fishery predict 1,200 Thompson steelhead returning, above the 850 threshold set for sustainability goals.
*
Anglers will have the opportunity to catch and release steelhead until the seasonís usual closing date, Dec. 31.
*
The fishery will be open on the Thompson River from Kamloops Lake to the CNR bridge below Lytton. Anglers are reminded that a bait ban is in effect upstream from the boundary signs located near Martel.

I hope this opening doesn't breed complacence and bring anglers joy to fish on 3rd lowest run of steelhead on record. Not saying anyone shouldn't-I hope this, percieved opportunity doesn't breed complacency, especially after a five pages of "kicked in the stomach" discussion, and work will continue to be done to change the situation. Sometimes these "sudden" opportunities are a fisheries mangagers best weapons against us. :tsk_tsk:

couldn't agree more rich!

rest assured, from this man's perspective at least, the issues and the sense of urgency don't change as a result of fish appearing.

it is too bad this opening did not include a bait ban due to the 4 to 10 times higher mortality rate with catch and release.see b.c. outdoors nov./dec./04
