does any one have any tips on what to use for smallmouth flies in the midwest?
(NE Illinois-Kankakee River)?
I am planning a day in the next week or so, and I am new to fly fishing. Any tips would be helpful.

Subsurface- Clouser minnows, beadhead wooly buggers, bunny deceivers, etc.
Topwater- Gurglers, Sneaky Petes, crease flies, etc.
You should get plenty of attention with these flies. Have fun.

One of my favorites the dahlberg strip diver in black and chartruse. And dont forget a good crawfish imitation.

White and chartreuse clousers, bubble gum clousers, sneaky Pete's, dalberg divers,
try a tube with a bead weight inside on a worm hook, works like a charm on a fly rod with intermediate line
