From the CT Department of Environmental Protection:

Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Arthur J. Rocque, Jr. today announced the reopening of the Barn Island Boat Launch in Stonington. The boat launch, which underwent a major renovation project, is opening a month and a half ahead of the original projected completion date. In March of this year, DEP announced it would close the ramp for renovations but undertake an expedited repair schedule to complete the project in time for the Summer season. The ramp has been closed since March 22. The $700,000-plus renovation project was funded by State Boating Funds, from fees collected from the registration of boats and the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Fund that supports projects that enhance boating access.

"We recognized the significance of having this popular boat launch open for the summer, which is why we chose to safely expedite the repair schedule," said Commissioner Rocque. "Now that the renovations are complete, the public will be able to enjoy a much improved boat launch that provides expanded recreational opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits."

Renovations to the Barn Island State Boat Launch included:

Boat ramp installation of a new, wider ramp of pre-cast concrete;
Gravel landing area a designated area to the west of the launch ramp for use by kayaks, canoes, windsurfers, etc;
Floating docks two concrete bulkheads with aluminum gangways leading to 8-feet wide by 80-feet long floating docks, one of which is handicapped accessible;
Dredging dredging in immediate vicinity of the proposed ramp and floating docks;
Rock removal removing the submerged rock hazard adjacent to the ramp;
Parking area redesigning, reconstructing, and paving the parking area;
Access road cutting back roadside vegetation, and repaving.

Great news that this launch is reopened so far ahead of schedule! :D

I can't wait to check it out. It will be great to be able to get in and out without being as concerned about low tide. Sounds like they did a great job with the upgrade. Hope there is enough parking for everyone now. It seems like the had enough space to expand it.

I hope some other ramps get upgraded like that, never seem to be enough good ones around.
