I am curious about the outlook for Montana rivers in summer 2004. I fished the Madison below Quake Lake last year without problem but stayed away from other rivers namely in the Missoula area due to reported low water levels and eventual closings. Is it more of the same this year (2004). Thanks in advance.
Looks like low water and drought conditions again. I fished the Big Hole yesterday, giant stone hatch starting. The river level looked like mid July. The upper 19 miles already closed due to low water. The Butte newspaper carried an article re: lowest recorded level for Yellowstone River on this date. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has a site for current conditions, but you can't beat local advice. Call a fly shop for up to date advice. June may be the best month this year, but there's got to be some bright spots later in the summer.
