Summer (caddis pupae / sandshrimp), alias "pink pupa":

Hook: Alec Jackson bronze #3 -or- TMC 200R #2
thread: 6/0 Uni in sedge pupa husk orange
dubbing: sedge pink Scintilla
tail (horns): Cut even segment out of the middle of a wood duck or dyed mallard feather so it looks like a "V" with the stem segment intact. Tie in two strands of crystal flash at the bend. Wax dub loop and dub in a small "head" at the bend. the "V" like horns, claws, or the swimmer legs of the fall sedge.
hackle: light tan / pink / orange dyed hackles palmered on every section

Instructions:

- tie in flash at bend (optional)
- dub small head at bend of hook
- tie in 'horns'
- palmer hackle over segment
- dub large segment next
- tie next "V" shaped horn so it is splayed out by the segment
- palmer over the end of segment, repeat so there are 5 segments total.
- hackle at eye and finish with matching thread.

General seasons:

Highlight each segment with imitation Indian Crow -or- golden pheasant tippets

Turbid winter flows:

Dub, hackle, everything in hot red on a larger hook; marabou tail with golden pheasant tippets tied in at bend.

Did a board search and several references to 'sand shrimp,' (Northfork seems to use a drift rod a lot!:hehe: ) and only this one post from Juro on a 'sand shrimp' pattern.

Anyone else have a pattern they'd like to share with the huddled mass?'

I tie another with globug yarn in white or pale pink with mustard back and a thin red streak in each section, 4-5 sections each with my wood-duck creeper legs and a collar. I used to call it my "bait" fly. Looks very much like a real sand shrimp.

Worked very well as a dredging fly. Doublespey has adopted it and might have some variations of my original theme to offer as well.

Nice flies !!! Did you ever try them (and the Sedge/Mudder fly) on Atlantics ???

I have a pattern dubbed the 'creeper' that is a more natural summery fly that the sandbug is based on, tried it on the Bonaventure but there were no fish in the pool or they would have surely jumped on it. ;) :rolleyes:

It didn't take long before Topher's sage words of advice soaked in and I became a believer in what the Gaspe regulars know about these magnificent fish.

I hadn't tried the sedge muddler up there but I will certainly give them a swing next time. I can't wait to go back...
