The next items up for bid on The Price Is Right.....

Last year my father was in the market for a new fly rod so I went bargain hunting for him. I found three, he kept the Sage, the rods below are the ones that didn't make the cut.

The Abel is a three piece, 9wt canon and the T&T is a two piece 10wt.

I bought them "as new", and they are as close to new as they could be without having protective plastic on the grips. I included unconventional photos to show what type of condition they are in. You'll notice there are no scratches on the fighting butt of the Abel, and neither ferule has a scratch on it, leading me to believe that the rods were hardly ever assembled.

I'm offering them here before I put them on any of the auction sites. My intention is not to start a bidding war, just to make back the money that I spent. For this reason you can contact me with offers via email (

Oops. I re-read my post and realized that someone might confuse the retail prices with the amount that I want for each rod.

Those prices were included as a source of information on the retail value if purchased in a fly shop. I am certainly not looking for $525 and $675, only a percentage of each.

Hopefully I didn't fluster anyone out there.

ignorance in action--I didn't even know Abel made rods! Can anyone who has cast one give it five second's worth of description?

I used an Abel 10 weight while down in North Carolina this fall. It was a big gun. I prefer a little softer action, but if you like a good stiff wand this is the one for you. I could really boom a line out there even with a stiff breeze in my face. It barely bent under the strain of some hard charging Cape Lookout albies.

O.K., no takers on the rods as of yet. I apologize for the delay in this message but a death in the family necessitated a hasty airline departure not long after my initial post.

I'm surprised that I got no inquiries about the rods. Maybe I'm barkin' up the wrong tree, or is it that the fur is still flying between the Hatfields and the McCoys over our mission...if we choose to accept it?

Regardless, here is your last chance before I subject myself to the ebay posting process.

Abel 3-piece #9 = $425

T&T 2-piece #10 = $325

I'll be posting them on an auction site Saturday morning(2/10) if there are no takers. Let me know if you are interested

The Abel sold for $465.

I'm putting the T&T on ebay tonight.

Congrats Mark -

It makes sense to put those somewhat high-ticket items in a place where people go specifically to buy things than a place where people go to collaborate about using them, especially since we inherently have a lot of toys by the time they get here. I assume the Abel's novelty factor made it attractive to the eBay buying audience as well.

Let us know how the T&T sale goes. This is great anecdotal information for those of us who might be selling stuff there in the future.

Good luck,

You're right, I didn't take in to account the glut of accumulated gear among the board members.

As far as the T&T is concerned, I posted it on Ebay yesterday for $375, and promptly received an unrelated email offer from a gentleman I had contacted for $350. Oops! I told him that if it did not sell in the auction he could have it for $350.

I'll let you know how it goes.
