Dble Haul

Bert and I did a marathon 16 hour day yesterday. We started at Watch Hill, then moved on to Weekapaug, Quonny, East Beach, West Beach, Central Beach, and the Narrow River. We saw plenty of bait everywhere, especially in Quonny Pond, but this pond was the only spot where we found fish actively blasting the bait. The peanut bunker were so thick that it looked like half an acre of peat moss was in the water. Stripers (some quite large) pounded the bait, but we and two other flyfishermen just couldn't hook up despite our best efforts.

At dark we decided to hit one of our spots on the CT coast to see if we could salvage anything from the trip. We were immediately into hickory shad, which were averaging nearly 20 inches. We were using our 9 weight rods and several times we were thankful to have them in the outflow. We probably knocked off about fifteen fish apiece before it ended and we headed the rest of the way home.

Moral of the story: persistance pays.

I was out on Ninigret yesterday in the yak.. I looked at Quonny earlier but it was almost slack tide and fancied Charlestown on the incoming. Same bait situation there and very tough fishing. I did pick up one large hickory shad. All manner of baitfish from real small to pretty large. There were tiny menhaden - almost translucent, 1/2 inch long with a silver spot at the head. They were jammed together in baseball size clumps - tumbling and writhing along in the current just beneath the surface. This produced some spectacular surface attacks but I couldn't buy a hit. They seemed to be targetting the clumps rather than individual fry.

I'll be getting up there over the coming week-ends - its just a matter of time before the hardtails arrive then all hell will break loose :D

Nice sight fishing at East beach if the sun is shining. Hardtails could hit the breachways at any time. I'm not sure how far inside they travel - at Quonny they dont seem to get into the main part of the pond but hammer the bait schools in the main current.

I may make the trip up on Sunday. I heard somewhere that the balling bait phenomenon is an incoming tide affair and that the fish tend to be a bit more responsive on the outgoing.

As my old pall Penguin would say "Weshallsee!" :D
