I have been trying out a new spot (for me but very popular with the locals)
And the 3 times i have been there i have been getting Goldeye and Sauger. They fight qiute well and are a load of fun on the 4wt but it is a huge piece of water to cover with a 7' rod.
Goldeye are almost like mooneye bout the same size too where sauger are always smaller than walleyes
Bright small streamers and light nymphs on a foating line
Just kidding. I did an image search for "goldeye" and found several photos and some fishing info. They look like an american shad with teeth (yikes!). Bet they are great fighters!
How big are the ones you're catching? The sites I checked out said they average 1 - 3 lbs, but one site listed a club record of 24 lbs 9 oz. WOW!
A good one is 14" which is about 2 lbs
I have been very impressed with the fight these guys put up not as sustained as a trout but they put all their effort in at the beginning. :eyecrazy:
