Is it possible that there are Ballyhoo in Chatham? I was walking along SB yesterday and got a very good, very long look at what appeared to be a Ballyhoo swimming along the edge of the channel. Bout 18 inches long, silver/translucent, prominent eyes and the telltale lower jaw bill.
Is this common?
PS they don't like sandeel patterns
I've seen them and believe they are halfbeaks, and yes they do appear on the cape on occasion. As do zebra fish, mahi mahi, puffer, sea turtles, pipefish. Must be summer!
According to this gulf of main research site they are quite rare:
But then again they appear more frequently than they get reported to "authorities".

Any chance that it may have been a half-beak rather than a ballyhoo? A couple of times per year I eiter see or hear about half-beaks being driven up on the beach by hungry stripers/blues.
