Can anyone report on how the Pulaski area has been fishing lately? I have the itch for some spring steelhead and am thinking about driving up to fish Fri, Sat, Sun.
I am familiar with most of the salmon river but am interested in exploring it's smaller tribs and the sandies since they are forcasting 2000 cfs on the big river.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to PM me if you prefer!
Water is on the high side, cold and clear - not fishing too good. I didn't see any fish flashing, either - not a good sign. Certain days fish well, apparently, but I didn't find it that way. Spent a lot of time observing, but wasn't much to observe. I would wait another week or two for it to warm up before going.
I am thinking of concentrating on the local tribs (I live near Rochester), as it is easy to check out several good streams locally for their actual conditions before travelling a long way.
Reports I read on steelheadsite.com indicate that the smaller tribs up that way aren't fishing well, either.
Maybe save you a trip, or you might want to try some tribs closer to home.
When you have the urge to steelhead and some fish are probably there, my motto is "GO". Mid April there is always the possibility of hitting a new run of fresh fish and we all know what that is like.
Have the browns vacated Sandy Creek in your neck of the woods yet? Had a couple of primo days out there last fall fishing with Carl Coleman.
Hal, I'm with you but there are good trout fishing options here right now so I might wait until the water is down a bit. The SR can be downright dangerous to negotiate when the water's up.
Sandy and Oak Orchard are good IF the weather cooperates. That's part of the problem this early in the year in general, and this year in particular. Example: Yesterday, it got up to 82 degrees. This morning, it was 62. Right now, it's in the low 30s, and scheduled to drop into the 20s tonight with scattered snow showers. Nuts!!
I would give 'em another week to warm up. I went to Sandy last week, and about FROZE to death - no fish, and didn't see any, either. Three other fishers were there earlier, but didn't stick it out long. Oak has been spotty this spring, as well - although I have caught 'em there in late April-early May.

PS - I edited this as I just got an update on the Salmon. (It was fishing good 1 1/2 weeks ago - water flow was 700 cfs.) I just heard officially it is now at 4000 cfs, and will stay that way for a while.
I was on the Catt yesterday - Tues - at the eastern end
of the reservation by Gowanda. Saw two fish caught on
egg sacks but overall the river was high and muddy with
a foot of visibility at best .
Catt is a great fall-run creek (advantage of no salmon to speak of, as well!) But in spring, it just seems to stay high and muddy as well, bordering on "forever". Also, if you ever go there, buy a reservation permit - most of the land is Indian owned! If you like high, muddy water, fish the Genny! Less hassle, and you will save a couple of hours of driving time.
Naw... stick to Sandy, Oak, etc. I think they are the little jewels of Lake O. fishing, even though I hate the crowds.
(Did you REALLY hire a guide to fish Sandy? Man, that stream's a piece of cake!) I got a 20 lb. brown there last fall - maybe I should have had a guide - I forgot the damned camera!
>Catt is a great fall-run creek (advantage of no salmon to speak >of, as well!) But in spring, it just seems to stay high and muddy >as well, bordering on "forever".
That's right. According to the USGS site, the river is unfishable or barely so at least 80 % of the time at this time of the year.
>Also, if you ever go there, buy a reservation permit - most of the >land is Indian owned!
The reservation permit is now $35/yr.
>If you like high, muddy water, fish the Genny! Less hassle, and >you will save a couple of hours of driving time.
The Catt is a nicer place to fish, tho (for steelhead).
Yes I really did hire a guide to fish Sandy - primarily to learn the access points, prime holes, etc. It's a beautiful little creek and I like how you can take a walk and ditch the crowds if you like. I landed a couple of fish in the mid-teens there and man is that fun in such skinny water! And I got pictures  (ask Hal).
Kudos to you guys for keeping a pretty good secret out there. Never would have found it without a little help from Carl D.
Bummer about 4,000 cfs on the SR. I was really hoping to get up there this weekend but the MA trout streams will have to suffice.
Yeah I still have the pictures on my hard drive makes me sick looking at them also ! Hey one of those would be a great candidate for the GLs poster fish. Will see about down sizing them. Now that you and Bobk have divulged the names of the those creeks where these lake run browns frequent expect some visitors from the western GLs.
Don't worry I already have it located on my online topographical satellite image site. Bobk has divulged all in separate emails to me and I have them all saved in a protected folder for future usage. (LOL) Those retired fellows have lots of time on their hands and will tell everything I think if you are nice to them.
Right Bobk ?
I have to go fishing with you sometime fellow Beaverkill angler.
If its published in a book that means its public informtion for all to use. Same for the internet, bet I could bring up a link with a map of it, within a minute of searching the net.
Not many secret fishing spots any more colleagues.
I have seen license plates from Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, California, and just about every state east of the Mississippi there. Secret? Hardly. Carl Coleman and his ilk have BLOWN it. Some of us just have the patience for cold weather, when the "tourists" leave.....
BTW, many times I have met young "guides" of his - nice guys, going to college for a better life, guiding part time, - and willing to share hot spots, good flies, and tips. Really a good fishing experience - if you avoid the crowds. A guy from Colorado that I met and teamed up with takes THREE WEEKS' VACATION there - he says they are the biggest trophy trout he has ever seen!
I we have discussed off line I have penciled that date in on my calendar. I will bring my tent, canoe, and one of the Siberians for protection. Its on the 2003 big trip list.
Have a great holiday weekend.
PM Out
P.S. I have never been to that western part of NYS, but have been to all other parts. Many people do not understand what a great scenic state NY is, until they visit its many parts. As they say
"I love New York".
