I am just getting into fly tying and have a vise, bobbin, scissors, hackle pliers, and whip finisher. Are these all the tools I need to get started? Are tools like a bodkin, hair stacker, bobbin threader, and dubbing twister also needed?
The flies I hope to tie most often are Adams, Royal Wulff, Royal Coachman, Muddler Minnow, and Hares Ear Nymph. What tools would serve me best?
You need the bodkin for teasing out dubbing and applying head cement and you will want the hair stacker for the getting a nice even collar on the muddlers. The bobbin threader is a maybe. I tend to forget where it is and just suck the thread through the bobbin. But if you are new to tying you will nick the thread & break it more often so you wil have more threading to do. I don't use a dubbing twister.
A great bobbin threader is the dental floss threaders that you can find in a pharmacy for little cost. They are easy to use and last a pretty long time when used for threading bobbins.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
