As the northeastern seaboard's coastal flyfishing season settles down before slipping into winter, one of the best places to say good bye is along the Rhody coastline between Pt. Judith and Westerly.

Names like Watch Hill, Napatree, Weekapaug, Quonochantaug and some that aren't quite as easy to pronounce provide a sport anglers late season reprieve.

When:  Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14

Where:

Pt. Judith to Westerly, Rhode Island - HQ at Burlingame State Park

Who:

Roster will be posted
Lodging:  Burlingame Campground, Sandy Shore Hotel

The Rhody coast is a beautiful, rugged shoreline with interesting structure for big gamefish on their fall migration.  Rhody can be like a line of rest stops on the striper's highway to the wintering grounds.  You can get into some real freightliners during the Octoberfest season throughout this stretch before the snow flies and snatches away our watery playground away until next spring.

The RhodyFest is a gathering of Flyfishing Forum enthusiasts and their brethren in a celebration of yet another glorious season of coastal flyfishing.  Events include a dinner gathering and a chance to put faces to the names we see on the board.  Hope you can join us!

What to Bring:

Campers can load up on gear easily - the sites are "drive up" and there are also primitive cabins with bunks at Burlingame.  More information about what to bring should be coordinated with Greg Estey and Jim Whalen.

Hotel guests should bring what they normally bring for hotel stays.

Boating:

Our generous friends with boats have volunteered to host fishermen to explore the other side of the surf.  Please expect to bring some gas money, flies, and good cheer to thank them if you are accomodated.

Shore Angling:

This part of the coast is widely accessible and offers a variety of structure from estuaries to pounding surf to tide rips to rockpiles and jetties.  Napatree offers a productive surfline with a structured point that produced stripers up to 30 pounds last year, dusk / dawn.  East Beach, Matunuck's deep hole; Weakapaug (one of last years hotspots); Charlestown Breachway; Quonny - just to name a few.  One never knows where the action is going to be, but being on foot is not a disadvantage in these waters.

Art Burton is a RIMS member with access to the coveted west side of Quonny.  You can also use small craft (kayaks, canoes, etc) to cross from the public launch on the east side to get there as well.

$50 oversand permits are available to non-residents, so we can split this pass and get several people on to the beach to chase blitzes.  I would guess we should be able to consult with Art Burton for more details.

East Beach was the scene of a two mile long blitz in November 1998... one I won't soon forget.  Charlestown Breachway has provided it's share of late action for me as well.  Weekapaug was a one-day wonder on Rhodyfest 1999.  Who knows what this year will bring!

Boating Schedule - TBD

Whether on a boat or from the Ocean State's copious shore access points, this is a season-topping outing that promises to leave you great memories through the winter.
